trip to Phoenix, Az: Jan 20 - Jan 23, 2006

the first roadtrip of the year and certainly one that has gone down as one of the most memorable in this lifespan...this in brief clarifies...

i had visited Phoenix once earlier...to watch Rush perform in the Summer of 2005.....many were the choice words that had found seats in my opinion of Phoenix...the weather was the main crib...temperatures in the 110 degree range coupled with 50% humidity would make most Bangaloreans feel that they had been judged and sent to hell...

this time round though Phoenix turned on the charm in the weather department....the company was fabulous...the food was brilliant...my opinion about the place now holds no choice words...but its still a place that needs you to don a fireman's suit in summer.....

had the best Mexican food ever at Barrio Cafe on 16th St....a must visit...it has its issues with timings but i love the fact that you can't make reservations at a place as nice as this...

it was also where i learnt that burritos have no place in a true Mexican menu...because burritos are not really Mexican....its an American invention...much like the fortune cookies in Chinese restaurants...the guacamole casero was a good indication to how thumping the food at the place was going to be...none of the entre├ęs that i tried dissapointed...actually they made me wish i had not committed to meet with other friends for dinner the same evening...yes yes i eat a lot and as often...so when the early Mexican dinner plan came up, i said "sure why not...i'll eat a little"....the dishes that we ordered were all vegetarian...and that bowled me over...so i cannot imagine how good the ones with meat would be....i work with the theory that if a place can get the veggie dishes right, there is little chance they will get the non-veggie stuff wrong...i am yet to be served by that theory...they have a 12-hour slow roasted pork dish that i intend to try the next time i visit...

i wondered if the place had perserved in getting its desserts right too....without a doubt, the desserts were brilliant....every dessert at this table of ten was sampled....closed eyes, a relaxed sigh and mamma mia...each one warranted nothing less...

post dinner, Sizzel and i met up with a couple of friends at a chaat* place [forgot the exact place - Little India or some such...i'll post the information in the comments]...4-star grade it was...i did not eat...i exemplified gluttony by pigging out after a moderately heavy dinner....purely forced by the superb way in which each dish was made to please....

the drive back was rather painful....we started late...short on sleep....exhausted...not a good mix....but i got to try out what snapping out of a millisecond nap while at 100 mph feels like...the first time around i was wide awake after realizing and calming myself down...a couple times later i realized it just wasn't worth pushing that hard....an hour long nap later, Sizzel took charge and we got into Albuquerque at the crack of dawn...

wish i had sat down earlier and blogged...i am sure i am missing details and opinions....

oh yes...the other thing about Phoenix...the interstates are messed up....be sure to travel with new maps...we got lost repeatedly thanks to not knowing that the 101 was not complete and hence wasn't the loop it claimed to be....and also for travelling with maps that were a tad old...
